From your pupils’ Progress in English (PIE) scores, it is now possible to determine a ‘Lexile® measure’ for each pupil. This is an objective measure of a pupil’s ability to cope with a given level of text difficulty, providing you with an innovative way of connecting children with books that match their unique abilities. Read more in the Lexile guide.
Step 1
For each pupil, calculate the combined raw score for PIE exercises 3 and 4, i.e. the Reading Narrative and Non-Narrative exercises. You can then determine a pupil’s Lexile measure using the simple conversion table shown below.

Step 2
Go to the Find a Book feature on this website. This gives you access to the UK Lexile Book Database, from which reading material matching a pupil’s Lexile measure can be drawn. By simply entering your pupil’s Lexile measure along with information about subjects of interest, Find a Book will create a personalised reading list for that pupil in a matter of seconds! The suggested reading material will not only motivate and interest the pupil, it will also be within his/her personal reading ability level – ensuring understanding, enjoyment and reading progression.
The UK Lexile Book Database currently contains tens of thousands of fiction and nonfiction titles specifically chosen for UK schools and teaching curriculums. And with more and more UK publishers obtaining “certified Lexile measures” for their books, the database continues to grow.
Step 3
Be clear as to what a Lexile measure is and what it is not.
A Lexile measure is simply an objective measure of how difficult a book is to read and is in no way related to age or school year group. Connecting a child to books that match his/her Lexile measure means that the child can then enjoy reading texts that are within his or her capability but with an element that is challenging and will encourage reading progress. However, that is not to say that only reading within a child’s Lexile range is useful. If enjoyed, any reading should be encouraged and it is therefore important that a child’s Lexile range is treated solely as a guide, not a reading prescription.
We hope you will find this new addition to your Progress in English scores useful and beneficial to your pupils. When used in conjunction with Find a Book, The Lexile Framework for Reading can become a powerful tool for personalising learning, building literacy skills and improving achievement across the curriculum.
