Why get Lexile® measures for your books?

When it comes to picking one book over another, a Lexile measure can make all the difference.  By placing reading ability and text difficulty on the same scale, it simplifies the choices for schools, parents and children.  Using Lexile measures, readers can find books that are targeted to their individual abilities and interests.  Not only does it provide you with a unique competitive advantage for selling more books, you can also benefit from:

Actionable information:

A Lexile measure is not just another score or test result – it provides parents, children and teachers with actionable information for connecting readers with targeted reading materials based on interests and abilities.

High-value, low-cost marketing:

From only £10 per book, you have perpetual licensing rights to each Lexile text measure. Many US publishers have integrated these measures into their catalogues and online book searches – and some even print the Lexile measure on the cover!

Anywhere accessibility:

Once a reader has been given a Lexile measure, he/she can search the Lexile Book Database using the Find a book feature on this website – increasing the accessibility to your titles at no extra cost. Children taking GL Assessment’s Progress in English test in schools also will be given a list of recommended reading from the Lexile Book Database alongside their Lexile measure. Looking forward, 2009 will see the introduction of Lexile measures into other popular assessments from GL Assessment’s literacy range.

Market demand:

As the popularity of Lexile measures increases in the UK, they are likely to play an important role in the purchase decisions of many local authorities.

No obligation:

Lexile resource measurement is a simple and straightforward process and does not require a significant investment of your time or resources. In fact, you have complete flexibility in deciding when you want to get started and how many books you want to measure – a complete collection or a single title.

From the US to the UK

In the US, a Lexile measure is the most widely adopted measure of reading ability and text difficulty.  With more than 28 million Lexiles measures being reported annually from reading assessments and programs, the demand for fiction and non-fiction books with Lexile measures continues to grow.

More and more parents, children and teachers now rely on Lexile measures to select texts that will support positive reading experiences.

Now the UK market can benefit from Lexile measures too! And there’s no reason why Lexile measures can’t become as big here as they are in the States so it’s worthwhile thinking about jumping on board early – especially when you consider how cost-effective and time-efficient the whole process is …

One simple process. One certified Lexile measure.

The measurement process begins with creating a user account and signing a contract. But unlike most contracts, we do not lock you into measuring a specific number of books within a specific period of time. Each publisher maintains complete flexibility in deciding the number of titles to be measured and the timeframe in which they are submitted for measurement. You can add an entire catalogue or start simply with a few titles to see the value Lexile text measures add.

Once the paperwork is complete, the Lexile resource measurement process is as easy as 1-2-3.

Step 1: Request Lexile text measures for your title(s)
Contact the Lexile Team at GL Assessment, describe the job requirements (i.e. number of titles, text format) and receive a service quote.

Step 2: Submit the text for measurement
Email, FTP or mail the text in a standard electronic format (one file per text). If an electronic file is not readily available, we can convert a hard-copy text to a digital format for you.

Step 3: Receive the certified Lexile measure and invoice
GL Assessment then will forward your text to US-based MetaMetrics, developer of The Lexile Framework for Reading®. Within 30 business days, a certified Lexile measure will be returned for your text and added to the UK Lexile Book Database. Rush service options are available for more time-sensitive needs.

Contact us online or call Graham Taylor on 020 8996 3333 if you are interested in becoming a Lexile partner or would like to discuss the Lexile Framework in more detail.

At a time when education is becoming more personalised and emphasis is being placed on 'stage not age' learning, it made absolute sense to link our books directly into a child's ability, rather than their age.
